Runnin’ Down a Dream

Neil and I started watching a pretty fantastical documentary last night called “Runnin’ Down A Dream,” the story of  Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers by Peter Bogdanovich. He’s that all-time eccentric but very talented guy who also made The Last Picture Show, which I also recommend (it was Jeff Bridges first movie).

This band is beyond incredible. Their stories are the stuff of legends, and some are so unbelievable that if they didn’t have so much archival footage you might not believe them all. It’s hard not to envy. I love stories of people who made success their own invention and didn’t compromise an inch. Lots of awesome commentary as well. My celebrity husband Eddie Vedder even makes an appearance (check out his guest cover of The Waiting!) I told Neil that once we get to a point where we aren’t limited by jobs he’s growing his hair out. Am I a weirdo for loving beards and long hair? Maybe just antiquated?

What are some of your favorite bands? Do you like the old stuff, the new, or a little bit of everything like us?

My sister goes up to WI every summer to see Tom Petty at an outdoor festival he does- she’s been a TP fan for longer than I have been (I think it was her first tape!). We run the gamut here- old, new, rock, pop, really anything that catches our ear. The other night we had a total trip down memory lane watching the top 100 songs of the 90’s on VH1. Smells Like Teen Spirit anyone?

I haven’t listened to Tom Petty since the last time I went to the grocery store.

My music tastes are stuck in 1990’s indie rock. I’m going to the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and I’m most looking forward to Modest Mouse, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Pavement(!). There are some great bands playing the fest from this century as well, but I can’t wait to see some of those 90’s legends again.

Neil and I always comment how the reason all these ’90s groups and older still tour is that there isn’t anything recent to compare musically or talent-wise. I say that but there are a few bands I love that are more recent. I’m stuck in the ’90s too, but am still completely all over the board in that category as well.
