Friday Link-up and Loving Lately

By February 13, 2015Friday Link-up

This kid. After consistently only getting up once a night for a few weeks, last night she woke up at 11:30 (I think the dogs woke her up when Neil had to go into work) and drank a 5 oz bottle, 2:00, and 3:30 — between which another 5 oz bottle was consumed. This after taking a 5 oz bottle and 1/8 cup of applesauce before bed. Growth spurt? Where is she putting it all?

Crockpot Chicken with Apple and Sweet Potato

Made a double-batch of this recipe after a friend from the gym recommended it. Very tasty, not a lot of ingredients, and the crockpot does all the cooking. Yup, perfection.

Dinner from last night, can not go wrong with the crock pot.

Toothpaste

I know, basic right? I have a love/hate relationship with toothpastes. I brush my teeth fairly often (the lasting effect of having comprehensive dental work/braces for four years), and I hate toothpastes that taste too chemically.

I’m a big fan of Sensodyne™, but was given a couple tubes of Arm & Hammer™ Truly Radiant™ to try. Tastes so fresh, no weird aftertaste at all!

Non-child development book: Primal Leadership

Still bouncing back and forth on my reads, but now I’m doing it 3-ways between professional development, fun, and child development.

VERY good so far! Leading with resonance is a skill far too often overlooked. #startup #whatimreading #books

Primal Leadership might go down as one of my favorite reads of the year so far. It was written in 2002, so it’s not brand-new, but the concepts are really relevant to a lot of the situations I face at work and in my business. While I’m not in management, emotional intelligence and resonant leadership are important no matter what your role is, so I highly recommend it.

Super easy, short read. Definitely needed the motivation this week! #books #whatimreading #bookstagram

I also covered Seth Godin’s Tribes over a few days. Super easy read, and while it doesn’t have a lot of “boots on the ground” information so to speak, it really gets you thinking about building communities and reaching people. All good stuff we’re trying to do not only in our business but at CrossFit Fringe as well. If you want to know more about what I’m reading, head over to GoodReads!

Found around the web this week…

Okay, maybe not just this week, but over several weeks. I go through spurts of not having enough time to read, and getting pockets of time where I read a ton. Here are my highlights:

Food
  • I’ve been looking for a lot of “first foods” for Kaitlan to play with that we could still eat and these carrot fries from Elana’s Pantry look perfect — and tasty.
  • Is there any area of information that Barbell Shrugged doesn’t cover? These Sweet Potato Gnocchi look like the perfect pasta substitute.
  • Has anyone ever tried cooking eggs inside out? This tutorial from Huff Post is intriguing…
  • Pizza is one of the things I always end up craving when I’m trying to eat better, but maybe going the route of these Paleo Protein Pizzas from The Box will help?
  • I’m always looking for ways to remove unnecessary bread from our meals — and loved these ways to make burgers without bread from Empowered Sustenance.
CrossFit/Fitness
  • Rowing has been in our programming a TON lately, so this guide from The Box Magazine was really timely.
  • Also from The Box Magazine, ten competitive CrossFitter’s share the worst WOD’s they’ve ever done. My worst WOD was an awful “Ben” chipper as we called them that had so many rounds of lunges that I literally almost collapsed on the floor by the time I got to — wait for it — THRUSTERS. Oh the pain.
YouTube

Dr. Libby Cowgill busting out strict pull-ups at Ladies Night. She asked me to make a short video to share with her students. If they can beat her, they get extra credit (she’s an reknowned anthropology professor)

  • Barbell Shrugged Interviews Tim Ferriss on Creating New Habits, Self: I have seriously listened to this about 3 times now and each time I glean more stuff. I read his book, The 4-Hour Body right before we went mostly Paleo and found CrossFit. There is also kind of a Part 2 on their sibling show Barbell Business.
  • One of our clients, Jessica Turner of The Mom Creative, is putting out a book called The Fringe Hours, which deals with how women can find time for themselves in the chaos of children, careers and life in general. I pre-ordered my copy, because this is definitely something I’m struggling with as a new parent: how to carve out time for myself, without the guilt. See the trailer here.

Yikes — this post got a lot longer than I intended. Have a great weekend everyone!
