Backpacking

I won’t lie. I love giving the new year time to settle in before writing resolutions, which are really more like goals — or if we’re talking about our house, a frightening to-do list. I feel like it gives me time to be introspective for a hair longer, and also read what other people have written about their year ahead. While some people don’t like the idea of New Year’s resolutions and choose not to make any, we kind of savor feeling of setting intentions and having a little list of things to get excited about.

DSC_2848

Last year we kept our goals pretty simple, and while we accomplished quite a bit (I totally rocked the 5 unassisted pull-ups and Neil is stringing together up to 5 unbroken muscle-ups at a time at CrossFit), a lot of things didn’t happen. We had really hoped to get out more — do some backpacking and splurge for some kayaks — but triple-digit temperatures this summer literally scorched our ambitions.

DSC_2651

We tried to escape to northern Minnesota, but it was even hot there! We’re realizing now that if we want to get out, it’s going to have to be earlier in the season, possibly even winter. So we’ve purchased some better sleeping bags and hope to try again in 2013.

dsc_2776

Bad weather aside, we managed to accomplish quite a bit. Neil is one upgrade away from a finished race car (progress slowed because it was too hot to race anyway), and I managed to read at least two non-school books a month (hot weather actually helped this goal).

Untitled-1

I think it’s safe to say that I look neither pretty nor happy while running…

I ran not only my first, but TWO half-marathons (Neil ran one too!) and a few 5 and 10k races. We’re still doing CrossFit religiously 3-4 times a week, and we’ve made huge progress from where we were a year ago. A goal to “get to the gym” is definitely not on our list this year.

So what does 2013 hold? Gosh where to begin? Neil jokingly said he wants 2013 to be the year of “doing stuff” since so many of our plans were hampered by the weather last year. Deciding that we probably needed to expand that theme a bit to make this post worth reading, I made up some prompts to answer.

DSC_0635

Jessica

I want 2013 to be the year I simplify a bit. I don’t want to do less, I just want to better organize my life in such a way that I eliminate mundane decisions and save my energy for things that rock my world.

I would like to take my fitness to the next level by achieving… 5 handstand push-ups. I have an irrational fear of breaking my neck, so these have been really hard for me to check off my list. I finally achieved headstands back in November, and I have the strength for the body-weight push-up, it’s just putting those two things together and putting my fear aside.

I really want to travel to… Colorado. And do Estes Park or any number of other wonderful parks they have. No fires this year, only s’mores!

In my professional life, I’d really like to… become a project manager for a client within my firm. Huge goal, lots to learn yet, but I’m getting there. For our own little business, I would really like to finally get a website up. It’s been 3 years, we still don’t have one, and even though we’ve been booked solid since the moment we started taking clients, it’s getting a little silly now. That being said, it’s a good problem to have.

In my off time, I’d like to learn to… knit and crochet and create something worthy of giving as a gift. This goal has been on my list several times, but I’m as serious as a heart attack about achieving it this year. Despite being a designer, I am NOT crafty.

This year, I’d like to spruce up the house by… installing a new deck, and if the stars align, I’d love to replace the stove in our ongoing kitchen renovation. However, I think the washer and dryer might end up needing to be replaced first.

This year in the kitchen, I’d like to make…Kombucha. I’m so tired of freaking myself out about this goal.

If I had one crazy goal that I’d like to accomplish this year, it would be… to get my CrossFit Level 1 Certification.*

*Apparently my wildest goal was the one I’m on track to finish first. I signed up for the course and test this week! Here we go!

And Neil…

Neil

I would like to take my fitness to the next level by achieving… strict muscle-ups. They’re hard, but I want to be able to string them together. Aside from that, I just want to keep CrossFitting. We’ve been going consistently 3-4 times a week now for the past 1 1/2 years, and I do not plan on stopping. I’d even be willing to try competing for fun or for charity. Aside from CrossFit, it’d be cool to do another adventure race.

I really want to travel to… anywhere we can hike or backpack, but I’m kind of interested in maybe exploring some big cities as well. I hope our big purchase this year will finally be a set of kayaks. There are so many places I’d love to kayak, and the dogs love floating. Overall, more R&R in 2013!

In my professional life, I’d really like to… achieve my CCNA/CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Associate/Professional. A year into my new profession, I believe I’m ready to get certified. I just need to study the formal guides or enroll in a boot camp to get ready. Like Jessica, I’d also really like to get a business website up. We are so overdue for one, it’s ridiculous.

In my off time, I’d like to… race! Racing season is just around the corner and the car is ready! Hopefully the weather will literally take a chill pill. I’d also like to do a little more gaming. I love playing DOTA2, and I’d like a racing setup (wheel, pedals, chair, etc.) to practice on in the off-season.

This year I’d like to spruce up the house by… giving our home network a makeover. Now that we have a server rack in the basement and our house rewired with CAT6e ethernet, I’d like to get a Cisco ASA5505 router in place using our Linksys router as a wireless access point. Eventually I’d like to replace it with a real Cisco Access Point. I’ve just finished giving our storage system an upgrade with a NAS (Network Attached Storage) from Synology.

Overall, my plans are to… continue to eat as healthfully as possible, while still enjoying some of the good stuff. I’d also like to branch out and meet more people in Columbia. I’ve been here four years, and am still missing having a group of friends like I had when I lived in Springfield.  Finally, I want to keep challenging myself to accomplish things that feel difficult or out of reach. I know I can do them, sometimes it’s just a matter of taking that first step.

We’re definitely ambitious in our goals, but having talked about these for a week or so now, we’re definitely angling for some down time too. Taking on fewer projects, focusing more on learning rather than doing. Not less work really, but maybe something a little more rewarding and soul-feeding. It’s hard to know how it will all unfold, but hopefully it nothing else, we’ve set some good intentions down for the year. That’s really what this is all about isn’t it?

(If you’re just checking into our Boundary Water’s trip, be sure to check out Days 1 and 2 first!)

One of the highlights of our trip (for me anyway) was Neil’s breakfasts. Every morning, he was the first up, making breakfast or brewing coffee for us while getting things ready for the day. We had a busy day planned (relatively speaking) for the third day of our trip — some hiking, showers, lunch and checking out an art show in Grand Marais — so he prepped a big breakfast of eggs, bacon and coffee.

DSC_2683

He is so good at balancing the skillet over our Jetboil.

DSC_2687

After breakfast, we hit the road to find a few trailheads. Up first: Honeymoon Bluff!

DSC_2688

Honeymoon Bluff is a moderately difficult but short hike that takes roughly 30 minutes (with stops to see the view included). The grade can be somewhat challenging at times, but a helpful set of wooden stairs has been installed throughout parts of the trail. It has a fabulous view of Hungry Jack Lake.

DSC_2689

Gorgeous view!

DSC_2697

Can you imagine how beautiful this would be at sunset, or in the fall…

DSC_2699

DSC_2702

After leaving Honeymoon, we packed up and headed to Caribou Rock. It’s a 7-mile trail, but we popped in for about 1.4 miles in and back to see the overlook:

Gorgeous! And so green compared to Missouri this summer.

The hiking party.

A picture of Neil taking a picture of himself. I couldn’t help myself, we’re so camera-phobic most of the time…

DSC_2713

After a good morning hike, we made our way to Grand Marais for our first showers of the trip. Showers are always a point of mystery in our planning. We never quite know where we’ll find one, but we know some place will have them. On our honeymoon, our showers ended up being in the back of a laundromat, and in Montana, a local KOA campground. In Grand Marais, the place to get a shower is apparently the municipal pool. No in the pool mind you, but in the bathroom showers. They were not luxurious, and there’s nothing like water timers and peeping 6 year-olds to test your motor skills and patience, but we came out alright.

After showers, we headed downtown. We had passed an outdoor supply shop on the way into town the first night and definitely wanted to check it out. They had a lot of nice, very expensive equipment, I’m glad we left before we spent too much money.

DSC_2722

We decided to hit the Gun Flint Tavern for lunch, a local spot right on the water that came recommended by locals. It was packed!

DSC_2728

DSC_2723

They had a great selection of craft beers and super-fresh menu options.

DSC_2726

Neil ordered a bowl of andouille sausage and veggie soup to start, followed by the spicy dry rub wings. They smelled amazing!

DSC_2727

I skipped the appetizers and went straight for a monster walleye sandwich with blue chips and cheese on the side. I just can’t come to Minnesota — especially so close to Lake Superior — and not get my walleye fix. It was SO good.

After lunch, we decided to peruse the local art fair that was happening outside…

DSC_2730

I gravitated immediately to this handmade canoe. Is it not one of the most incredible things you’ve ever seen? Even the weaving on the bench seat is handmade. A work of pure art and patience, too pretty to put in the water if you ask me. On a side note: I really can’t wait until we get kayaks of our own.

DSC_2731

We also walked enjoyed another walk along the shore. How can you not when you’re spoiled with a big beautiful lake to enjoy?

DSC_2591

After our hikes, showers, lunch and perusing it was back to the woods for us! Stay tuned for Day 4!

Note: From our pictures, it’s obvious we enjoyed some non-Paleo eats. This is our first vacation since going Paleo, and we decided that while we wouldn’t go crazy, we would enjoy local food and not stress diet too much.

(If you’re just checking into our Boundary Water’s trip, be sure to check out Day 1 first!)

I love that typically our first day on vacation is a lazy and laid-back one. After fighting a losing battle to sleep in with the morning sunshine, we crawled out of our tents around 8:00 and immediately started coffee. Although there might be better or more sophisticated ways to brew coffee while camping, we’ve found the best bang for both our buck and limited ambition is Starbucks Via. Boil water, pour packet, add creamer (coconut!) and done. After a light breakfast of coffee and granola bars, we decided to make our way back to Grand Marais to do a little exploring.

DSC_2654

We parked along the main street and immediately made our way to the shore to admire Lake Superior.

DSC_2638

Heaven!

DSC_2646

Perfect photo-op for Christmas cards!

DSC_2651

I’m pretty sure this is the first somewhat nice photo we’ve taken together all year…

We then hit the town. First stop, quaint local bookstore, oozing cuteness.

DSC_2653

Which happened to be right next door to donut shop! Obviously donuts are a “rare to never” part of our diet, but I make it a goal to eat one on vacation every year. It’s been appropriately dubbed “vacation donut.”

DSC_2659

DSC_2658

World’s Best Donuts indeed! They were amazing. Super fresh, soft and sweet. Not hard to understand why they are now a 5th generation shop!

DSC_2655

We then hit The Beaver House to check out bait and tackle for fishing. Its been around for 40 years and have an amazing assortment of rods, tackle and bait. In addition to just stocking goods, they are a wealth of information and advice. I love that Grand Marais values a healthy local business culture, so refreshing and sadly unique.

DSC_2629

We then made our way back to the lodge to pick up firewood and bait. The lodge was pretty sweet, reminded me a lot of the Lodge in the movie Dirty Dancing. I wouldn’t mind doing a lodge trip sometime in the future…

DSC_2635

Bait and permit in hand and wood over shoulders, we headed back to camp to try our hand at fishing.

DSC_2671

Audrey was dubbed the Master Angler. Too bad the fish were apparently not impressed with our democratic efforts…

DSC_2673

While we waited for the bobber to dip, we snuck in some reading. We always shoot to read one book. For this trip, Neil chose God is not Great by Christopher Hitchens and I chose…

DSC_2670

Wicked! by Gregory Maguire. Definitely not new, but I saw it in a used bookstore a few weeks ago and decided to give it a try, since the play has been so successful. I always lean toward reading fantasy fiction novels on vacation. The forest feels like the perfect environment. Has anyone read this? I heard there is more in the series, are they worth the read?

After a few bites and one very small large-mouth bass, we decided to pack it in and make dinner. Burritos were on the menu!

DSC_2664

I won’t lie, the men did ALL the cooking on this trip and Audrey and I loved it. Neil made ground hamburger with spicy sauce on the Jetboil which we then paired with cheese and salsa on tortillas. Super simple and unsophisticated, but perfect!

DSC_2662

DSC_2666

Look out, that badass burrito has a knife!

DSC_2667

Blurry, but you get the idea.

DSC_2660

Enjoyed with a Black Butte Porter by Deschutes Brewery (OR). A little heavy for summer, but still really good. We heart dark beer. After dinner we settled into our chairs with drinks and s’mores before rolling into bed. Stay tuned for Day 3!

Thumbnail image for BWCA Day 1: On the Road

We’re back! We had a wonderfully relaxing trip to the Boundary Waters, and I’m already looking forward to our next trip back, hopefully a little deeper into the woods to explore more of the rivers and backcountry. Toes first, legs next right? A little back story since I left you all mostly hanging last week. [...]

Our Long Lost Friend

Pizza! Can you believe I haven’t made a pizza crust in almost a year!? We ate so much pizza before going mostly Paleo (80/20 with our cheat days) that I could almost throw together a crust with my eyes closed. This time however, I had to double-check the recipe. Our pizza tastes have definitely changed [...]

The (not-so-MEGA) Float

May 21, 2012
Thumbnail image for The (not-so-MEGA) Float

This float has been on the books since January. We’ve been so excited to squeeze a canoe trip into our schedule that we literally started pulling out all our gear nearly a week in advance. Originally, tons of people were invited and the goal was to achieve a “mega” turnout and therefore have a mega-float. [...]

Sorry for the sparse posting this week, it’s been one of those game-changing surreal ones. More on that next week. For now, we’re headed off into the woods to do some backpacking and floating. I can’t think of a better way to spend this weekend! Clive and Matilda are BOTH coming. Think we’re in over [...]
