Just tuning in? Check out our first day in Chicago

20130408_083714

I woke up bright and early Monday morning and got ready while Neil enjoyed some extra sleep. I met the other girls downstairs and our guide Brenda took across the street to Marketing Werks for orientation. Being from a little midwest town, being on the 24th floor was definitely a “woo” moment.

breakfast

We were brought into a conference room where we settled into and partook of the lovely breakfast spread they had set up for us. Believe it or not, this was my first time having Nutella! I feel so silly, but apparently it was only Emily’s second time, so at least I don’t feel like I’ve been under a rock. Now to sneak a jar home without Neil noticing…

droidpackage

After a brief introduction through the program specifics, it was the moment we’d all been waiting for, device time! Many of us had correctly guessed that we’d be receiving the Motorola Droid Razr HD, but were totally surprised when we were also given a Fitbit!

array

I’d done a little snooping on these products while trying to guess what we were going to be given, so I was really excited. While I already have a Droid (a six-month old Samsung Galaxy S III), the latest Droid devices have even more comfort features and longer battery lives, which has been my biggest complaint about my Galaxy.

The reps from Verizon and Motorola were super helpful in getting us all set up and suggested a lot of great apps to try. I’m pretty minimalist as far as apps go, but I definitely want to review a few for you all, and maybe try some new workouts as a result. I’ll definitely share more of an initial report next week once I’ve had a little more time to play with the phone.

Our guides Brenda and Kristen were absolutely fantastic. The second part of the meeting was an overview of the program. As I mentioned in my last post, I was stunned to be chosen, so it was cool to hear more about the selection process and why we were chosen. It was also great getting to know the blogs and niches of my fellow bloggers — all from the Midwest. Represent!

phones

As the sole CrossFitter of the group, I’m excited to give my own unique perspective on not only these devices, but the state of tech for CrossFitters in general. Well, to the best of my ability that is. While I think we typically espouse a more minimalist approach to fitness (ie no machines), I think it often goes unsaid the many ways we use tech to enhance, track and document our fitness. And as I’m more than a little tech crazy, you’ll definitely see plenty of other thoughts on these devices for daily living as well. Above all, as I’m pretty new to this ambassadorship stuff, know that you’re getting 100% of mine (and Neil’s) honest opinions. We deal with a wide range of technology every day, and we have few loyalties and many opinions.

We closed the session out with lunch from Hannah’s Pretzel! Loved my pretzel roll and salad! Neil and I definitely lamented having to leave without getting to visit more restaurants. A return trip is definitely necessary.

I met up with Neil back at the hotel and filled him in on the program and devices. I think he was even more excited than I was. We used the new phone right away to find a restaurant on the way out-of-town. We’ve been wanting to try dim sum forever (we don’t have it here in Columbia) so we used the Voice Search and were able to find The Phoenix, which was only a few miles away in Chinatown and rated really well.

The dim sum was fabulous. We had pot stickers, spring rolls, chicken feet, tripe and chiu chow dumplings. The hot tea served with our meal was amazing.

Then it was back on the road and bound for home! Many thanks to Verizon for the awesome trip and the great devices to play with for the next six months!

Now for an informal poll. What phone do you currently use, and what led you to choose it?

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Health and Fitness Voices program and have been provided with two wireless devices and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.

Hey guys! What a whirlwind 3-day weekend Neil and I just had in Chicago! I’m excited to tell you all about it and let you in on why I was there. A few months ago I was contacted by Verizon and asked to be a part of the Verizon Health and Fitness Voices blogger program. I was shocked. Me!? I follow Anne from FANNEtastic Food and Meghann from Meals and Miles, both of whom have worked with Verizon. So what did they want with me!? I mean, we are a little device-obsessed, but definitely not in any way big-time bloggers. Thankfully they assured me many times that it was in fact not a mistake, so now I feel okay announcing it to the world.

Print

They scheduled the big kick-off event in Chicago this past weekend, which also happened to be the same weekend as the annual Shamrock Shuffle, the largest 8k race in the world. Over 44,000 people participate each year, which makes it the biggest race both Neil and I have ever been in! Obviously running has taken a complete back seat to our participation in the CrossFit Open, but we decided to run purely for fun and to just experience the thrill of such a large event.

coffee_wind

We left our house early Saturday morning, grabbed coffee and blitzed to Chicago as fast as our tiny rented Toyota Corolla could take us. It was insanely windy on the drive!

expo

By the time we made it downtown to Navy Pier, we had just an hour to pick up our packets and explore the expo. There were tons of great vendors and dozens of area races and running events to explore. I am so jealous of the people who live here. They have so many options, there was literally something for everyone. Spartan Race? Mud Run? Half-Marathon? Color Run? Zombie Run? Full-Marathon?Holiday run? Check!

hotelroom

We then made our way to the hotel. Verizon booked us at the very cool Hard Rock Hotel on Michigan Avenue. We loved all the music memorabilia and funky artwork throughout the hotel. Bowie in the Bathroom anyone? Okay, he made mornings a little awkward.

giordanos

We had high hopes to explore the city and eat at one of the places we’d researched before arriving, but we were exhausted, so we headed across the street to a Giordanos for pizza. The wait wasn’t terrible and the pizza filled us right up. It’s been forever since I had deep dish. It was so good, but boy did it give me the worst wheat belly.

Afterward we settled into our room with some movies and hit the sack early to rest for the race.

raceday

We woke up to a warm-ish and sunny day. Perfect for the Shamrock Shuffle. Everyone was super bundled up, but Neil and I opted for shorts and t-shirts. While it was a little cold at first, we warmed right up when we started running. We didn’t take our phones (we run sans devices for the most part), but it was an awesome event. Super well-organized, a gorgeous winding and mostly flat route through downtown. It really made me realize how poorly organized some of our local races are. I love how they spaced us out so we could get a nice stride and plenty of personal space, and there were staffed stations throughout and snacks at the end. We couldn’t have asked for better, and 5 miles is a great distance.

Unfortunately, I think my work in the gym earlier in the week gave me my first-ever case of shin splints. I’ve never had them before, but holy crap, they are terrible. I ended up walking almost all of mile 2, and hobbling mile 3 before they subsided a bit. Such a bummer because I felt amazing that day and think I could have easily gotten the 48-50 minute time I was hoping for. Neil of course did fantastic, finishing in 45 minutes.

neilschair

I found Neil in the crowd. He won a chair! We cashed in our drink tickets for a couple of beers (they taste amazing after races don’t they?) and sat by the Buckingham Fountain with our snacks. We then slowly made our way back to the hotel. There were so many people!

After a shower and some much-needed R&R, I headed down to the lobby to meet up with the other Verizon Voices Bloggers for dinner. We walked down the street to the Park Grill and enjoyed a fabulous four-course meal while we got to know each other. They gave us a plethora of options to choose from, but I went with the Pear Salad, Wild Mushroom Flatbread, Skuna Bay Seared Salmon and Pineapple Upside Down Cake for dessert — all of it completely fabulous.

dinner

Hanging out with the girls made me realize just how out of the blogging mindset I’ve been lately (really though, the past two years since I went to BlogHer). Everyone had business cards, media kits and posting schedules, and well, I had none of it. Nonetheless, I cracked a few jokes and tried to scrub my language clean and everyone seemed to think I was okay. I really have to get my act together though, I felt so dumb.

After dinner, we all kind of went our separate ways. A few opted to go out, but many of us were just plain exhausted. Unfortunately I had a major project to put dents in for work, so I retired upstairs for movies, some Neil time and working. I also snuck in some Google searches to try to guess what devices we’d be revealed with the next morning.

Next up: Working with Verizon and what can expect to see here.

Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Health and Fitness Voices program and Verizon paid for my accommodations, race entry and meal.

Denver in December

by Jessica on December 20, 2012

in Food, Friends, Travel, Weekend

Patrick!

I’ve been playing massive amounts of catch-up this week, but it was all worth it because I got to spend the a long weekend in Denver this past weekend! My best friend Patrick graduated from engineering school and was chosen Outstanding Fall Student (valedictorian).

As we’ve been friends since high school, I’ve been around for a bit, and the guy definitely deserved the honor. He spent enough time studying, testing and interning to put about five engineering students through school. I can’t fathom that level of dedication and commitment. Every week I thought I put in a ton of hours going through grad school was easily trumped with a passing Facebook conversation on his way to the library or his internship.

Patrick is that friend that makes you wonder sometimes why they’d want to be friends with you. I’m not getting down on myself, but guy practically sparkles. I’m so lucky he’s still willing to slum it with me, and few people know me better than he does.

Thanks CrossFit Denver for a great workout. Finally got my first KB snatch!

At least I can say I got him into CrossFit. He and his wife Jen have been going several months now and are loving it. I got to visit their box while I was there and it was so cool to see their progress and complete a WOD with them the first night I was there.

Warm-up:
12-10-8-6-4-2
KB Swing
Wall balls
Lunges (each leg)

Burgener Warm-up – focusing on bar form

Strength:
EMOM (Every Minute On The Minute): 8 minutes (at 85 lbs)
1 Power Clean
1 Hang Clean
1 Jerk

WOD:
3 Rounds:
20 KB snatch (10 each arm at 20 lbs)
10 lateral bar-facing burpees
10 jumping lunges (35# bar on shoulders)

Finish: 8:17

A peek at the inside. I LOVED their pull-up bars!

I picked up a sweet shirt to show my friends back home. I only wish I could have taken their pull-up rig with me as well, it was AWESOME. After WOD, Patrick made an awesome dinner of two flavors of pork loin and the best honey bourbon sweet potatoes I’ve ever had. Did I mention Patrick is an amazing cook? We also cleaned out two bottles of wine and spent the night trying to form coherent conversation. It ended up being a lot of mumbling, giggling and saying “you know?”

Breakfast the other day....

Saturday morning we had a HUGE breakfast at Hotcakes downtown. I had an omelette, hash browns and some pancakes as a special treat and guzzled 3 cups of coffee.

Patrick getting pampered.

We then went and got our nails done. Patrick was hilarious. He was just getting a pedicure, but his feet are so ticklish that he was almost convulsing in the chair.

Weird picture...

Saturday night was Patrick’s graduation party. He picked his favorite (and mine) restaurant, Cafe Brazil, and we were spoiled all night with the most amazing food and drink. I had a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, made with Black Seal rum and ginger beer and a Caipirinha, which is made with cachaça, sugar, key lime and crushed ice. The Caipirinha was by far the best drink I’ve ever had. It’s somewhat like a margarita, but is made like a mojito. It’s super fresh and light, and not overly sweet, which I love.

Reserved seating...

We managed to make it up and out of the house the next morning for his graduation. We had reserved seating in the first row, which was great because it was a HUGE ceremony. We were there for close to 3 hours, just for the graduation!

More Patrick amidst a sea of drapes...

Patrick gave an amazing speech, by far the best of the evening. He was so comfortable in front of all those people, and they just kept cheering for him. I think everyone found his story so relatable.

Pretty lights...

After graduation, we all walked down the road to Rialto Cafe for dinner. We were completely starved. I ordered a Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing Company while waiting for my food. So good! For dinner, I opted for a BLT, which for whatever reason came with a big slab of mozzarella in each half. Not complaining though, it was super fresh and the pile of fries practically put me in a food coma alone.

Downtown Denver was absolutely gorgeous that night. Knowing we almost moved there, and would still in a heartbeat made the walk back to the car somewhat bittersweet. It’s sometimes hard to reconcile where you want to be vs. where you’re needed.

After dinner, we rushed home so Patrick and Jen could pack for their red-eye flight to Costa Rica. It was so funny. I took them to the airport, then stayed at their house for another night. It was sooo weird coming back to his house without him.

Is this not the cutest kettlebell you've ever seen?

I managed to entertain myself a little though. Cutest kettlebell ever!

Now I’m home and it feels like the entire trip was a dream.

I didn’t want to close this post without acknowledging the events in Newtown. I don’t have anything profound to add to what has already been said, but I worried mine and Neil’s silence would be confused for apathy, so I wanted to explain our feelings and maybe some perspective given where I was this weekend.

Everything was unfolding as I got off the plane in Denver Friday. It nearly created a standstill, and there were people crying and burying their faces in their hands, nearly two dozen at each of the TV’s I passed in the concourse. For as much as I hear we are desensitized to violence and tragedy, it was anything but business as usual in the one place that has suffered so similarly this year.

During Patrick’s graduation, a posthumous honorary degree was presented to a student who was killed in the Aurora Theater shooting last July. Her parents accepted it for her, and in their speech they spoke candidly about their daughter’s life before her murder and the impact her desire to help others will now have with a scholarship created with thousands of donated dollars, and a yearly charity event that will collect sports equipment for needy children. There were no news cameras, and I got the sense from just about every face in the room that they weren’t wanted anywhere.

I can’t say I blame them. The media response to events like this is tragically routine. All someone not directly involved (99% of us) needed to know was easily obtained in a breaking news alert. The rest was almost a second tragedy that unfolded in slow motion over the weekend and now continues a full week later. Non-stop coverage.

Neil and I have avoided the news altogether. We don’t know any of the details and I don’t believe we really need to. Not when the continuous broadcasting cycle fills air time with gruesome details and interviews with anyone they can chase down and harass into speaking with them. Affected communities have repeatedly and publicly asked for privacy and for the media to not sensationalize details or victims, yet as long as the public demands it, as they do, they deliver — creating another infamous place known for one thing to everyone on the outside, a scar that will never heal.

What I don’t think people realize is that in an age of social media, we too are broadcasters. I read a post by Andy Crouch this week that asserts that, just like TV or Radio, silence doesn’t seem to be an option in social media. Silence is interpreted as mutely absent rather than silently present, leaving little difference between us in our choices to speak (or type) and the choices cable news makes in what to air.

I’m not unaware or unwilling to address the seriousness of the problem we have in America regarding gun violence and a host of other related issues we can’t seem to address preemptively without being pegged as socialists, but I believe that is a dialogue that needs to happen outside the immediate aftermath of tragedy, not in it.

Like I said, I didn’t have anything truly prophetic to say, but I know I’m not alone in thinking that sometimes the best form of comfort is a silent presence.
