So lazy, so good

by Jessica on October 29, 2012

We kind of dorked out this weekend. Lots of lazy gaming, good cheat eats and movie watching. It’s the last weekend I’m in town for nearly a month, so I felt like doing absolutely nothing. I didn’t even do my long run and I totally missed the yoga class I wanted to go to. We also entirely avoided Mizzou Homecoming this year — slept right through most of the festivities. Lazy!

Neil requested his favorite baked corn dogs as his cheat meal, so that was one of our few productive moments of the weekend. They aren’t all that hard to make, actually pretty fun…

We also enjoyed another pumpkin ale, the O’Fallon. Very tasty.

Both were enjoyed watching The Avengers and Moonrise Kingdom.

So that was our weekend. We were supposed to carve our pumpkins last night, but even that didn’t happen, oops! Guess we’ll have to do it tonight.

How was your weekend?

Friendly Weekend

Weekends, more so than weekdays, make us eager for Spring. I think it’s being around the house all day and wishing it was just a little warmer out so we could work outside. This weekend, however, there was very little work happening. We had guests!

Neil’s best friend Chris (Crash) and his fiancé Tina came town for a visit and some design work. They are getting married this spring and need some announcements and other misc. things designed. It’s been forever since I’ve done fancy print things, so I am happy to oblige.

But first, food!

The weather this weekend was mild enough to finally BBQ again. Neil’s been chomping at the bit! After last season, we finally put the old grill on the curb and picked up a new Weber just last week. It was overdue. Our old murdered out discount grill was rusty, slowly falling apart and a pain to clean. We’d been going back and forth on whether to buy a nicer grill, a Big Green Egg, or a moderately priced grill AND a smoker. We settled on getting a reasonable grill and smoker, because it offers us a little bit of everything.

Our menu consisted of, Pork Steaks, Tiger Tails and a huge batch of asparagus and Brussels sprouts. I tossed the brussels in a little honey and coconut sugar, and the asparagus in salt, pepper, minced garlic and olive oil. Always a hit, though I think the asparagus should have probably come off the grill a little sooner.

After dinner, the boys retreated to the loft for a mini-LAN party, while Tina and I grabbed some snacks and headed to the couch for some movies. Tina recently completed grad school as well, so a night doing absolutely nothing on the couch is still a weird feeling. We watched 27 Dresses, It’s Complicated, and New in Town (fun fact: it’s set in the town my family is from). We totally lost track of time until the boys wandered down around 4:00 a.m.!

Needless to say, we were a more than a little ragged and hungover the next morning — and HUNGRY! We decided to take Crash and Tina to our favorite breakfast spot, Cafe Berlin. We love it because it is fresh, uses local ingredients, and the staff are always a great source of entertainment. On this visit, a cook in the kitchen was belting out “Unbreak My Heart.” I ordered my favorite spinach and swiss omelette, Neil ordered biscuits, bacon and gravy, Tina had some amazing waffles, and Crash ordered a MASSIVE pancake burrito. Yum!

After our massive breakfast, we said our goodbyes. And then we crashed…

Fruit Salad and Lettuce Salad

Ever go on a cooking hiatus? We’ve been on a bit of an unexpected one this week. I’ve had yearly planning meetings at work, and what I thought would be the perfect amount of food (you know, based on those standard FDA portion sizes) ended up being wishful thinking. The portion sizes were HUGE, leaving us with tons of leftovers. My boss and I have been splitting them up, and for the whole of this week we’ve subsided on two tubs of fruit and mixed greens salad.

I feel like I’ve been on a surprise detox, and I have to tell you, I feel GREAT! Sure, I’m getting a little burnt out on salad greens, but the fruit can keep on keepin’ on as far as I’m concerned. I could do this all the time, although I am very much missing our kitchen adventures. We’ll be back this weekend, promise – with bread!

How was your Valentine’s Day? Ours was fairly low key. We had work all day, then took Clive for a long car ride, ordered our favorite pizza and watched Inception. Have you seen it? We thought it was pretty awesome, though not as good as all the hype made it out to be. I think I was expecting more twists and turns in the plot? What did you think?

Nook Color

Nook Color

My V-Day/early birthday gift from Neil: A new Nook Color! I’ve been completely obsessed with downsizing my enormous book collection (see just a piece of it here) in preparation to move, and I think this is the perfect way to do it without sacrificing my book fetish. I’m finally going to read the Harry Potter Series, among a ton of other books. They all feel right at my fingertips, I feel so powerful! Okay, maybe not. But I will be beyond happy if I didn’t have to move all those books again.

TRON: Legacy

March 9, 2010

If you are anywhere near as geeky as me you can recall as a child being totally mesmerized during the original TRON movie. The concept of being able to exist inside the computer (well before the word cyberspace and “matrix” came about) was something that was quite exciting and between it and the Nintendo Entertainment System, was [...]

For Samantha

November 5, 2009

James MacArthur. You may remember him from such films as “Swiss Family Robinson,” and more recently “The Love Boat” ( ’80′s). He is dreamy isn’t he? Do yourself a favor and just savor this image and do not feel compelled to google him, lest you suffer my fate and find that he is very obviously in [...]

Happy Weekend!

August 21, 2009

We are so ready for this weekend. It is the first since before the wedding that will neither involve being out of town or preparing for a wedding. We’re ecstatic! In the absence of both of these circumstances there are still tons of things we’d like to do and accomplish, so the brief rundown: Friday: [...]
