Towing to Mid America Motorplex

As Jessica mentioned on Friday, that afternoon we loaded up the trailer and Jeep and headed to Omaha, NE. For what? A track day of course! At about 5 1/2 hours drive time, this was the furthest we have traveled to do a track day.

We also took the dogs, which always makes a trip more work, but also more enjoyable. We’ve been really lucky, Clive and Matilda are really good sports when it comes to traveling. Even with the added noise of pulling the car on a trailer and alongside noisy semis didn’t seem to upset them too much. They were in a constant cycle of naps and begging for road snacks.

This was my first time to Mid America Motorplex and I can say now that I really enjoyed the track. After the massive floods in the area in 2011, I wasn’t sure quite what conditions would be like, but for the most part the track was still in very good shape and enjoyable to drive on.

This particular event was put on by the guys at Find The Line. I got a chance to talk with Find The Line owner Damian Dela Huerta a good bit about the track and how to drive it. Damian has a race car of his own and was a great resource to have, and I definitely took the opportunity to pick his brain about how to find the good racing lines at Mid America Motorplex.

Mid America Motorplex is a 2.23 mile circuit (about double the size of Gateway!) and as you can see has a lot of really great turns. There is a little bit of something for everyone at Mid America. You have two straights that are good for well over 100mph, you have a couple late apex turns, and you have two sets of slower speed technical transitions that allow the lower horsepower cars to gain some time on the more powerful cars if you get those turns right.

Some of my favorite things about the track would be turn 3 to 4 where in my car I can exit turn 3 in 3rd gear and hit 4th and have the pedal to the floor all the way through turn 4 before braking for turn 5.

Turn 5 to 6 is a sweeper that since the track sweeps outward you can carry a lot of early exit speed because you will not have to worry about going off track there. Turn 7 comes up very very fast!

Turn 7-8 was perhaps the most tricky for me to get right. As you can see you can do a “double apex” on the turn where you hit the turn apex on 7 and then hit the turn apex on 8. OR you can give up turn 7 apex and track out to the left and then late apex turn 8.

9-10-11 and 12-13-14 turns were such a joy to drive and really reminded me of my Autocross days in that if you got these smooth and efficient you could make up so much time on someone who was not very good at those transitions.

Here are some videos of my laps. Sorry about the terribly shaky camera. I tried to dampen the camera mount the best I could but the exhaust note/vibration is just too much for it. I will be ordering a new mount soon that will eliminate this problem for next time.

Here is a slideshow of the pictures of the day! Unfortunately due to how large the track is, it is quite hard to get good on-track photos so we do not have any of those.

Since there were only around 20 cars there we were able to get over an hour and a half of track time! That is about the most track time I have had at any event. The kind of focus and concentration that is required to keep getting faster and faster on the track and the heat inside the car I was quite tired by the end of the day.

Packing up is always bittersweet because while you are quite tired and typically feeling pretty accomplished with your day, you know that what comes next is the wait for the next track day.

I hope you enjoyed the post and until the next track day I will leave you with this:

We’re coming off an amazing but unexpected 4-day weekend. After finally getting our first big snow of the season, the town pretty much shut down and Neil got to stay home with me for two whole days. It was like having a real-life coworker again, or well — you know what I mean. Someone to talk to other than the dogs.

We subsisted on soup and these amazing baked fries. I could eat baked fries forever.

But before we get into our weekend, let me just start with this:

email

I passed my Level 1 test and am now a CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1) Trainer! I took that straight from the email so no one can sue me. As I mentioned in my last post, I wasn’t supposed to find out until Monday, but I happened to check my email Saturday night while Neil and I were making cookies and saw the email pop up. I screamed. So. Loud.

I can say this now, but waiting was such a nail biter. Literally. I thought I’d kicked my nail-biting habit, but nubbin fingers say otherwise. Everyone says that as long as you pay attention you’ll pass with ease, but a few of the questions left me so nervous. I couldn’t even put on the shirt they gave us because I thought I’d jinx myself! So, without further ado…

DSC_0308_2

Yay! Needless to say, some celebrating was in order. Cider and some dark chocolate and cranberry trail mix!

snacks

We also had a few of these…

So good, can’t wait to share Neil’s recipe! Now the rest of our weekend…

Saturday morning brought an insane lower body WOD that smoked my quads and glutes (I’m still hobbling around). You should definitely try it.

Kiss your quads goodbye chipper workout...

Recovery was our favorite avocado, egg and bacon “salad”…

And a stir fry…

The rest of the weekend was cleaning and getting re-settled after what feels like two weeks of insane travel and work. Nothing feels as good as starting the week with clean laundry, fresh sheets and an organized inbox.

Oh, and we did play in the snow a bit. This was Matilda’s first big snow with us, and boy did she love it. And apparently some of the staff at Vimeo loved her. Too funny.

Random Thursday

This week has been killer. If there was any question, the holidays are DEFINITELY over, and it’s back to work big time for both of us. I woke up yesterday thinking it was Thursday! Anyhow, here are some of the random things going on around here…

DSC_1580

Our old ’80s humidifier finally kicked the bucket this winter (not before bleaching a spot on my carpet to mark its passing — grr!), so I told Neil to look around, research, and pick what he thought was best. He picked this one, and now instead of just our bedroom, it takes care of the WHOLE house. Look at that thing, it’s bigger than Clive! Thanks for posing buddy, mommy appreciates it. Notice a trend that Neil tends to go BIG when he buys stuff? Remember the pressure cooker this fall?

DSC_1592

He even bought a remote so we know exactly the humidity percentage levels in whatever room the remote is in. I think we’re a little device crazy…

Matilda would like a clause added to her contract to insure she gets one creepy staring photo per post.

DSC_1491

My mother-in-law joined Pinterest, and I’m reaping the awesome reward. It looks amazing at night, but it’s hard to get a good photo of. I’ll try again tonight.

DSC_1583

Everyone on Facebook and Twitter is saying they are sick or feel like they’re getting sick. I stocked up on Emergen-C on Amazon. There’s some irony in drinking tropical-flavored vitamin supplements to avoid getting sick in the winter in the midwest.

I also bought this. We played it with Patrick and Jen on our ski trip last year and it’s my second favorite game to Cards Against Humanity. It’s easy to learn, and doesn’t require a lot of mental effort to play (read: perfect while drinking). It’s also lightweight and doesn’t have a lot of pieces, so I might throw it in our packs for backpacking.

My MIL gifted us a ton of dried fruit on their visit a week ago. I’ve never really had dried pineapple like this (it’s always in some mystery processed shape as part of some over-sugared mix), but it’s amazing. A little crunchy, a little chewy in some parts, but the flavor is like candy. I’m sure will make a mess of my dehydrator, but I must try to make it again, along with some banana chips, which we’ve already eaten all of.

Now back to surviving the rest of this week. So far I don’t feel like I’m winning.

How’s your week going?

Weekend Snapshot

This weekend really flew by and we really didn’t get anything done. Not a big deal, I’m not complaining, but I think the lack of happenings made it seem like a single blink. Truth be told I was a little bummed out. Last week, one of my favorite professors, of all time, passed away of [...]

I feel like it’s been forever since I recapped what I would consider an “average” weekend for us. I was so excited to be home this weekend. I lost all but one of my weekends to travel in November, so being home and having virtually no plans was something I looked forward to all week. We [...]

This week, behind the scenes, I’ve been working on a series of posts about our first year of being mostly Paleo and doing CrossFit. I deluded myself into thinking I could be one of those bloggers who can churn out posts daily effortlessly, and that I would have them finished and posted in less than [...]

Halloweenies

Happy Friday! It’s a cold and rainy morning here, and everyone seems to be cuddled up wherever they can find a warm spot, even if it means sleeping with the enemy. I think we’ve finally got our yucky colds beat, and luckily, right in time for the weekend! Tomorrow morning we’re off to Kansas City [...]
