Weekend R&R

We have officially come down with our first colds of the season. Such a bummer. We spent part of Saturday outside at a very blustery tailgate for the Mizzou vs. Alabama game, and woke up on Sunday not feeling so hot. Needless to say, it was a mostly uneventful weekend — which was fine, because it literally rained the whole time. Aside from the tailgate, we spent most of our time reading, playing games and watching movies on the couch.

On Saturday, we finished No One Left to Lie To by Christopher Hitchens. We’ve both read quite a bit of Hitchens, and although I typically stay away from political non-fiction (especially during election season), I was intrigued by his thoughts about the Clintons. They were in office throughout our teenage years when we were both obviously a little less aware of what was going on, and other than the Monica Lewinsky business, neither of us had a lot of knowledge or memory about most of his presidency. Without giving too much away, there’s definitely a lot to learn, and in typical Hitchens form, he tries to cram as much in as possible. It was impossible not to come away with a diminished view of both Hillary and Bill, and it left me wanting to read more about them both — from a multitude of different perspectives.

I then opted to pick up something a little lighter, and have had Death Comes to Pemberley on my list for some time. If you’re an Austen purist, you might struggle to really feel any of the characters as you know them, especially Elizabeth. It’s lacking some character oomph perhaps? She does a good job of building scenes and stories, but seems to poop out when it comes to really making the characters live in them. However, it is an easy read and the mystery is somewhat entertaining, so not all bad.

On Sunday Neil made a big roast in the crock pot and we finally got around to moving our old TV stand into the guest room and the displaced dining room buffet in its place to house the TV. We weren’t sure how it was going to play out, but it’s the perfect fit and we love it. Here is the “before”:

And now the “after”:

What do you think!? It has plenty of room to hold all our music/cable/gaming devices neatly with plenty of room to add, and it hides all the cords, which was our biggest gripe about the old metal/glass stand. We’d still like to replace and minimize some speaker equipment, but  it’s worlds better than it was, and fits the rest of our furniture. For now I can focus on hanging some things and finding some curtains.

It was a nice low-key weekend, but we’re ready to shake these colds and get back to life.

How was your weekend?

Taming the terror.

by Jessica on September 13, 2012

in DIY, Furniture, House

My mom is currently in New Ulm visiting my aunt and uncle, and she asked if I would take a few pictures of the furniture we received from my grandparents estate as it looks in our house. Even though it’s forever a work in progress, things are shaping up quite nicely over here, so I thought I’d share the progress with you too. Let’s start with the dining room…

DSC_3208

Here is the view as you’re coming out of the kitchen. We only have two pieces in here, my grandma’s dining room table and the matching buffet she received as a wedding gift. They are in amazing shape, and they fit this room perfectly. Still working on accessories, and I can’t wait to paint in here. I hate the flesh-colored paint.

DSC_3212

A shot of the buffet. I was cleaning in here when I stopped to take pictures, so that’s why the vacuum and furniture oil is out. Ignore the sticks and the weird love ornament, they are for something I’m working on. Oh, and we’re also looking for a wall-mounted wine rack, any suggestions?

DSC_3213

A shot from the other side looking into the kitchen. I someday envision it looking like this.

DSC_3215

And the living room. The green looks really bright in these pictures, but I’ll take it.

DSC_3218

I’m so indecisive that we’re still without curtains, any suggestions? Obviously probably a solid or really faint pattern? I’m so paranoid about things clashing or not looking good, that I just don’t do anything, which looks equally as bad! Next year I’d like to finally replace the car-sized couch with something grey and a little bit more demure.

Incidentally, we just finished the final requisite task to making some more furniture swaps around last night. We received the last of the server supplies from Newegg and Neil got everything set up downstairs, eliminating the last cord we had running from the TV to our computers upstairs in the loft. So now we can ditch the metal TV stand and replace it with the buffet that used to be in the dining room.

DSC_3222

The current media center configuration, total cord city right? Such is the life of people who work in IT…

Remember the “Terror Room”? It’s looking a little better these days as well…

DSC_3228

Through some miracle, we managed to find the one angle that allowed us to eek this couch into this bedroom. We had to remove the door, and we lost some paint on the door frame, but that’s all fixable right? We’ve come to the conclusion over the past few months that apparently old houses weren’t designed with furniture-moving in mind. Apparently in the magical era known as the ’50s, furniture just appeared in rooms. You also only needed on income to live off of. Fantasy I tell you. We have some patching to do, but it was worth it. This couch was in my grandparents basement, and we had more late-night slumber parties and holidays down there than I can count. Hope our future children like it because it is likely to never leave this room again. For now, this room is going to be a cozy den for us  to watch movies and game in.

Another angle. The side chair and table are a nice tough. Eventually I’d like this room to be kind of bright and funky, yet softly-lit, like this.

And lest you think I totally have my shit together now, let me let you in on a little secret. The closet is still FULL of our pictures and wall-hangings. Yup, still haven’t hung a single thing.

So looking better, yes? Any suggestions for us?

It’s Labor Day weekend! I hope you all have awesome plans for this last weekend of summer — we’re just hanging out indoors enjoying the much-needed rain. Since we’re just hanging around the house, we thought we’d share a few things we’re currently loving around here…

DSC_3159

Fire Tees: Neil surprised me with a Fire Tee when I came home from my business trip last week. They were designed and printed by Colorado artists to raise money for those affected by the fires in Colorado this summer. After our trip was cancelled, we came across their site via a friend while looking for ways to contribute. We deeply love that area and hope to get back there soon! In case you’re wondering, Neil got this one.

Yesterday’s News: I love my cats, but I hate traditional cat litter. Those little rocks get EVERYWHERE, and it sends my OCD into overdrive. I came across this cat litter a few months ago, and we’ve been hooked ever since. Not only is it easier to clean up after, but it’s made from recycled materials and is a much more sustainable approach in the area of cat “loo management” as we like to call it around here. And yes, I did just blog about cat litter.

Poang chair covers by J Caroline Home!: A year ago, I stumbled upon two Ikea Poang chairs on Craigslist for $125. Despite being from Ikea, I love how comfortable these chairs are, so they have a place in our living room. The covers were pretty worn out, but I held off on replacing them because Ikea had limited color options. Earlier this summer, I came across J Caroline Home! and she had tons of awesome patterns for the Poang, as well as several other Ikea models. We ordered, and 6 weeks later our chairs have a new, fresh look. Love!

Infuse Your Mood Tea: A few weeks ago, we received two boxes of this tea to try, and they are almost gone! I’m a green tea addict, and this eleuthero-infused green tea is delicious. I can’t tell if it’s boosting my mood or energy levels as it claims, but I feel pretty awesome.

Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues: Completely random paperback that I came across at the library the other week. Breezed through it in about two days and it was actually pretty good. Not in a “change my world outlook” sort of way so much as a “you know I feel happy I ran across this book, it is deceptively well-written” kind of way. What I failed to notice until after I read it was that it was the second book in a series. I guess I have some more white trash zombie reading in my future. (BTW – Follow my reads on GoodReads!)

So that’s what’s going on around here, what’s going on in your neck of the woods?

Over the holiday weekend, we celebrated ONE MONTH in our new house. Even though we are at the beginning of what is sure to be a long journey, it’s exciting to [...]

If you were on Twitter on Friday afternoon, you might have noticed that I was in full SQUEE over a buffet I had found on Craigslist. It was gorgeous, with beautiful original hardware and accents that match the general time period our house was built. I had to have this piece for our dining room [...]

For the past few weeks since we moved in, we have been sleeping on a stacked mattress and box spring. Romantic huh? I left our old bed on the curb. We’ve wanted a new bed for some time, but with the move impending, and not wanting to risk damaging new furniture, we decided to wait [...]
