Jessica’s Five Guilty Pleasures

By November 5, 2009November 6th, 2009blogging

So, one of my blogging idols Kathleen of Jeremy and Kathleen posted an entry last week called “Five Guilty Pleasures” and invited her readers to do the same. Yes its been several days, but thanks to the lovely flu bug I brought home from Springfield, I’m just now getting to it, and the rest of my blog.

I don’t do a lot of things that I feel guilty about, because… well feeling guilty always outweighs the enjoyment I get from things I should feel bad about so I don’t do them. Complicated I know, but you should be on my end. I’m so foggy from meds, it took me ten minutes to write that sentence.

1. Doritos

I don’t really feel guilty about my obsession with Doritos because I don’t get to have them all that often. I painfully weaned myself off them last year to lose weight for the wedding, and after cocaine-like withdrawl I’ve been diligent in my sobriety ever since. I indulge sometimes, usually in picnic situations where someone else brings it. I never buy, it might cause a relapse. So many new flavors…

2.  Books

My parents said I was hooked on reading before I even knew how to read. I destroyed libraries worth of books, copying letters that I saw before I knew what they were. As an adult, reading is a vacation. It’s a means to escape and learn and envision a different world than the one I live in. Books are my security blanket, I have one with me wherever I go, and I feel weird if I don’t have a book I can pop open in a free moment. See my booklist for what I’m currently reading and plan on reading next. Now you may not think this is a guilty pleasure, but you should know that I buy books the way most girls buy handbags and shoes.

3. Starbucks

Starbucks goes against all the ethical standards that keep me from going to other major conglomerates, yet I cave every time the mere mention of the white or red cup is presented to me. It’s the branding.  I consider myself smarter than that and capable of outsmarting clever  design and branding, but I can’t when it comes to Starbucks. It makes me feel happy, it’s as simple as that. No other coffee shop or cafe does it the same way. The holiday specialty drinks are my kryptonite.

4. Miniature Schnauzers

I know, I don’t have a puppy. But while my friends are entering the season of babies and baby fever in their lives, I continue to just love puppies, especially miniature Schnauzer puppies. I just love the breed. My aunts have each had one or more, and they are by far my favorite dogs. It’s the cut of their fur, their size and their authoritative demeanor despite their size.

5. Vacation

Neil and I have the best time on the road together, whether it is a day trip, a staycation or a long road trip. We love to see new places and experience them together.

What are your guilty pleasures?

So I’m wondering what would happen if I UPSed you a box filled with Doritos?

Mr. Hodges, are you trying to sabotage my diet? Hmm…what would happen? Well, I’d have to kapow you with what would be thunder thighs after a box full of doritos. I have no self-control with them…especially the chili and ranch flavors.

      KAPOW!

You can be sure J.D. got an earful of my opinion…I yelled “Mr. Hodges! What on Earth do you think you’re up to?!?!?” when I read his comment and I also added a few “tsk tsk’s” to the stern looks I gave him.

Neil bought me doritos tonight…you men are against me….

Chili and ranch you say? Ahh… (makes mental note to see if those flavors of Doritos are available via Amazon Prime) 😉
